In 1992 the new constitution of Kazakhstan was established, which created a representative government with a separation of powers among three coequal branches of government. The Executive branch consists of President Nazarbayev, recently elected (2014) Prime Minister Karim Masimov and the cabinet which is a council of ministers appointed by the government. In the legislative branch there is a bicameral parliament which consists of the Senate, (47 seats, 32 of which are voted in by majority with a two-round vote and 15 of which are appointment by the government) and the Majlis (107 seats, 98 of which are directly elected by proportional representation vote to serve 5-year terms, and 9 indirectly elected by the assembly of people of Kazakhstan). And finally the Judicial Branch consisting of the supreme court of the republic (44 members) and the constitutional council (7 members). Supreme court judges are proposed by the president, then confirmed by the senate.
